WONDERLANG / About us

A small team. A big adventure.

WonderLang grew from a simple experience: discovering how much language you can learn while getting lost in a good RPG.

Where the idea began

I’m Jonathan, a French RPG fan who grew up with Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, Dragon Quest, Pokémon and Zelda. Playing games that were not translated into French helped me learn English.

In 2016, while living in Korea, I was juggling language study and another Final Fantasy adventure. That experience inspired a game where learning a language happens through a story, rather than beside it.

A community-backed journey

WonderLang’s original Kickstarter campaign exceeded its funding goal. Backers helped shape the game through feedback on rewards, artwork and mechanics. Their support funded freelancers and assets and continues to help the project grow.

Crafting the game

The foundation is RPG Maker MZ, expanded with custom and adapted plugins for dialogue lookup, sentence explanations, language keyboards and learning mini-games. Controls and interfaces are adapted for different scripts, including right-to-left writing.

The artwork combines commissioned illustrations, licensed packs and selected free assets. Artist Cheung Ngo Chau created many of the character designs. Language teachers, tutors and consultants have also contributed to the project.

Bringing the language to life

Dialogue is drafted and adapted for beginners, checked against a core vocabulary, and reviewed for grammar, meaning and natural phrasing. Repetition and sentence explanations support the learning curve.

WonderLang uses text-to-speech voices. Pronunciation and delivery are adjusted for clarity, with variations in accent and pace. These are synthetic voices, rather than a fully voice-acted cast.

What your support makes possible

Purchases and language funding contributions support further artwork, language content and improvements. WonderLang is available on Windows, macOS and Android. iOS, European Portuguese, Eastern Armenian and Swedish are still pending.

WonderLang Beyond is a separate sequel in development for intermediate learners. Follow its campaign from the homepage for news. Thank you for helping an independent educational game grow.
